10 SKY SAILOR December-January-February | SUMMER 2025/2026 more confident and precise on my nil wind final approaches. The aviation action that did occur was nothing short of impressive. By the time the presentation dinner rolled around on Sunday night, the tally had already hit 160 aerotows, a testament to how hard the pilots, tugs, and organisers pushed to squeeze in every feasible moment. On Monday morning (the reserve day), towing resumed at first light and continued until the wind conditions made it impractical – a real embodiment of the ‘take nothing for granted’ ethos that often underpins hang gliding events. by Tom McDonald The Forbes Team Competition turned out to be an exhilarating, if somewhat unpredictable, ride, but in the best possible way. From the outset, the event was beautifully organised, with clear but casual briefings, a friendly spirit of teamwork, and superb support from the core group of mentors (Jonny Durand, Glen McFarlane, Guy Hubbard, Steve Blenkinsop, and SAFA Operations Manager Rohan Taylor to name a few). It was fantastic to see around 30 pilots from all over Australia turn out for the event, bringing a great mix of experience, energy, and camaraderie. Despite the Sunday and back-up Monday flying tasks being grounded by strong winds, the weekend still proved remarkably fruitful as participants made the most of the downtime with Q&A sessions, methodical landings training, and aerotow practice. It was a pleasure to fly my Moyes Gecko 170 using the landing tips picked up during the alternative program. I felt My Fantastic Forbes Team Challenge! Photos: Vicki Cain
