64 SKY SAILOR December-January-February | SUMMER 2025/2026 #1952 – PG tree landing 20/02/24, Corryong, Vic A low-hours pilot was flying their paraglider from Mt Elliott, Corryong (Vic), and drifted over the back whilst climbing in a weak thermal. PIC then lost the thermal and realised they had no escape option other than to land in the trees. PIC was promptly rescued with only bruising and scratches to a lower leg. No damage to gear. Always maintain situational awareness when thermalling, keeping track of rate of drift and direction, and possible landing areas if the flight does not go as planned. When planning operations over significant forested areas, consider carrying a tree rescue kit. If a tree landing is made, do not unclip from the harness and attempt to climb down. Make yourself secure and await assistance. #1954 – PG on a tree at Landscape launch, Vic PIC was plucked off launch at Landscape (Vic) in thermic conditions, and before they could regain control, the wing drifted into a nearby tree. Minor rips on glider top surface were sustained without any injury to the pilot. Good wing control in slot launch sites such as Landscape is essential. Be prepared to kill the wing if control cannot be assured. #1955 – HG water landing at Portsea, Vic PIC was flying their hang glider at Portsea (Vic). They misjudged the timing of their landing while approaching, and pointed towards the ocean, into wind, to wash off height. PIC turned crosswind, attempting to circle back towards the beach, and then back for a better windward approach, but was too low and hit the water approx- AIRS Safety Wrap-up
