29 November | December 2022 SKY SAILOR In the first week of October, the Alpine Air Challenge/Intro to Competition Flying with Bright Flight was held over the picturesque Victorian Alps for more experienced female pilots to learn the skills necessary for XC flights in a competition setting. This was followed by VHF Radio Endorse- ment training for PG3 pilots in collaboration with the FlyStanwell Club. The event gives in-person assistance in learning about the use of VHF Radio. Coming up is the three-day XC Masterclass with Fly Manilla, offering 10 women the opportunity to learn how to safely navigate cross-country in the Tamworth area. Finally, at the end of the month, Stanwell Park Refresher & Check Flight Clinic will be a full day of education for women who need to brush up on their skills, build confidence and get back into the air after a break. Women with Wings member Catherine McMillan said the events will provide local pilots with a chance to develop their skills and confidence and continue progressing with the support of their fellow female pilots. “Our Women with Wings initiatives provide a safe and supportive environment for female pilots who are looking to take that next step in their pilot development,” Catherine said. In the 2021/22 financial year there were approximately 298 female sports aviation pilots in Australia, representing 8.4% of SAFA’s members. Several female pilots are leading the way to increase these numbers further. “With women under-represented in our sport, it’s great to see more female pilots discovering and rediscovering their love of sports aviation,” Catherine said. “I know there are many female pilots out there who are craving adventures, and all we need to do is to create more opportunities for them to rediscover the sport and fall in love with it all over again, as well as continuing to improve their skills.” For more details visit www.safa.asn.au Photos: Courtesy Catherine McMillan
