30 SKY SAILOR September-October-November | SPRING 2026 required – by the time Susy rejoined us above the rocky cliffs, the climb had been pinched off. From 1800m, the forest crossing was a breeze. Carol and I connected with a prom- inent peak on the other side and climbed back up again. We were established. Meanwhile, back at Widgee, we could hear other pilots attempting triangles to the north and east. Daron Brinsdon and Felix were flying the classic ‘Le Petit Tour du Widgee’, which heads north to Mt Chuckie, east along the Tower Range behind Widgee town, and then south along the Glastonbury Range. Cloudbase was forecast to reach around 2500m farther west, but there was a massive forest crossing in the way with scarce landing options, apart from the occasional forestry trail. Nick Neynens had once made this crossing, so I knew it was possible. Thankfully, the crossing is narrowest at its southern end, where two rocky cliffs conveniently provide enough thermal boost to get across safely.
