As we approached Diamantina Hut, conditions became tricky – Geoff and I dropped low and had to claw back altitude. A booming 5m/sec thermal provided the boost we needed. With grins plastered across our faces, we topped up and pressed on. Soon, Mt Hotham came into view – a place I usually associate with snow, skis, and winter trips, now transformed into a summer alpine playground from the sky.
